What causes you more anxiety, a trip to the dentist or having your photo taken?
Early in my photography career, the subject of a story I was working on brought his nervousness to my attention, and to this day, my first step before I take any portrait is to calm my subject and build a trust and a bond between us.
I have been a photographer at Washington University in St. Louis since 1988 and have had the opportunity to work with countless departments to document the lives and accomplishments of faculty, students and staff. Besides handling individual assignments, my duties include orchestrating photo coverage of major University events. Examples include every presidential and vice-presidential debate, the inaugurations of Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton and Andrew D. Martin, campaign kickoffs, ground breakings, building dedications, reunions, Founders’ Day and Commencement.
I am very proud that I was part of the Public Affairs team in 1992 that converted the University into a Presidential Debate Site with seven-day notice for the first and only modern Presidential Debate with three candidates. This effort paved the way for the following Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates. My efforts covering WashU Athletics and placement of images, in local, regional, and national publications, during numerous successful National Championship runs, is also a point of pride.
Throughout my career I have covered MLB, NFL, NHL, and USMNT and USWNT World Cup and Olympic Qualifiers. Highlights include coverage of the 1994 World Cup, including the Championship match between Brazil v. Italy, the 1985 and 1987 World Series, the 1999 NFC Championship, the 1988 NHL All-Star Game and the 2009 MLB All-Star Game.
I am a proud and involved father & grandfather, and enjoy the game of golf.
